Shelby backed 1965 GT350 R “ONE OFF”
Cobra so named in honor of Shelby and on a personal note the owner flew the U.S. Army Cobra attack helicopter.
Cobra is a rotisserie ground 1700 hour build.
The donor car was a 1965 GT 2+2 with Special Handling Package just like the donor car used for the GT350 R. The donor had just 41,000 miles no damage no rust.
Cobra’s builder Brad Hornbaker, a Shelby craftsman, re-engineered the car to compete in SCCA and SVRA events. The build focused on the powertrain, drivetrain and suspension.
Powertrain
A Prestige Motorsports custom built 347 Stroker used a DART block, SCAT crank, AFR185 aluminum heads, DSS 10.1 pistons, Comp Thumper cam with 108 LSA, Edelbrock RPM Performer black intake topped w Quick Fuel Black Diamond SS 650 carb topped with a Shelby spun aluminum air plenum fed by a Shelby porthole hood, a MSD ignition w 6 AL box, a Be Cool three row cross flow aluminum radiator w electric fan, a GT350 R oil cooler, CVF Racing serpentine pulley, and an AVIAID oil pan that was made in 1965 for Shelby. The engine dyno results showed 450 HP 427 lbs torque. The engine is still under warranty.
The drivetrain includes a TREMEC Super Duty Cobra T5z 5-speed with a Steeda Tri-Ax short throw shift system, Hydramax hydraulic clutch actuator for the McLeod Suosr Street Pro 10.5 clutch, a Panhandle Driveline 3.5 inch aluminum driveshaft that turns a Shelby 9 inch Notchback, K Code, w a Speedway Engineering 3.89 Posi w Moser 31 spline axles.
Cobra’s suspension is fully adjustable with mostly tubular components including Global West tubular LCA and UCA, Shelby sway bar, Ride Tech struts, QA 1 coil overs and Shelby Drop that combined can adjust ride height by 3 inches. The rear is Maier Racing and Chris Alston GEN 2 suspension with Shelby Koni shocks, 4.5 mid-eye, 165 lb springs, tubular sub-frame connectors. and an adjustable panhard bar.
How does Cobra perform? She is a 4 second 0-60 car that brakes 60-0 in 125 feet without fade, and her skid pad results are stunning….1.17 g!!!
Cobra’s livery is loyal to the seventh and most famous GT350 R, the Essex Wire car that uses black and orange Le Mans stripes. Cobra also use livery elements most famous Ford’s newest 2024 Mustang GT race version named “Dark Horse.” Thes elements include the black roof and tail light panels.
Cobra’s body was stripped, prepared and painted Ford’s Ingot Silver Metallic bathed in House of Kolor Show Quality Kosmic Klear infused w Paint w Pearl Silver Homographic metal flake.
Cobra’s race bred bespoke cockpit uses the GT350 R 6 gage instrument cluster filled w Speed Hut and Autometer gages. Seats are black SCAT Pro Car Rally w aggressive side bolstering. Headrests have Shelby Cobra embroidered logos. The trunk is a custom upholstered in black roll and pleat vertical stitched Naugahyde that matches the interior vertical stitching door panels and seats. The trunk lid uses CVF Racing billet hinges.
Cobra is the 37th GT350 R that is Shelby backed and Shelby built!!!!!
