Resident expert? Well thanks for the vote of confidence, but this forum works because its a Team.
Wrauthe- A word of advice- you need to "sh!t where mr Hutton eats" what I mean by that is you need to start doing web searches. Check the social sites Facebook, MySpace, Classmates, Reunion.com, all the places he might hang with his friends- let them know he scammed you- he will love that. Then do a search on his phone number- find out where he is posting items for sale and then go to every forum and post about him. Finally, use one of the people locators like inteliius.com to find out every piece of personal info on him so that you know where he lives and who his relatives are- contact them and tell them he owes you money as well.
Finally when you hone in on his exact location- check the online court cases to see if there are any judgements against him and if so contact the courts to see what info you can get.
You need to launch your attack on EVERY front at the same time- keep him engaged in a war and involve as many people as possible.
You might not get your gears but you will introduce him to a great deal of misery.
And after you have batted him around like a cat does a mouse- then sue him in your state small claims court.
